TECH TIPS by Dave ClaytonYour Source for Technical InformationVacuum PumpsVacuum pumps often do not get much attention, yet they are a vital component of the lyophilizer -critical to the freeze drying process- and are a necessary maintenance tool as well.
Vacuum pumps are also used in freeze dryer maintenance to evacuate refrigeration systems before charging. This evacuation is to remove any contamination, such as moisture or noncondensables, that might be in the refrigerant loop. The same attention to vacuum pump performance is required for this evacuation step to be successful. The pumping rate and blankoff pressure of a vacuum pump used for refrigerant system evacuation is critical. Any pump with a rate less than 4 cfm, or a blankoff pressure higher than 500 microns, is not going to do an adequate job. For more on refrigerant contamination, see our October, 2011, Tech Tip.
These technical tips are for use by qualified maintenance personnel who are familiar with their specific freeze drying equipment. These tips are intended only as general guidelines. Lyophilization equipment is frequently custom configured and some tips may not be appropriate for all freeze dryers. Always read and follow the directions of your equipment's maintenance manual.
